fbook reminder

“Future Death Toll are an exciting performance and sound-art troupe, with a mighty presence on YouTube, and luckily for us, a library of terrific songs as well. Three orange jumpsuits seem to indicate that they are prisoners as well, though by appearances, prisoners of their art, or the world, rather than a Maximum Security incarceration facility. Musically, F-DT are a more friendly, but still weird-as-fuck Genocide Organ; home brewed and delicious. Sonically therein, lies the suggestion of everything from The Residents to DEVO, to the colorful roster of Rainbow Bridge Recordings; and it’s on the strength of a self-released cassette alone that a LIVE visit to My Castle of Quiet and WFMU was proposed, track after track engaging in a way similar to the homespun multi-track charms of the original lo-fi cassette era of the 1980s, labels like Subterranean and Posh Boy; and what makes it apropos to the horror-shaped goings on of this show are the droll, apocalyptic references, the tone of the vocals, and the suggestion that one “just crawl into a body bag instead of going to work.” There’s also enough crackle, thump and jarring sounds to call this noise, though the relatively short, catchy tunes make it pop—pop-calypse, that is. Contemporary noise-heads won’t know the difference, they’ll jump-along, and those with an older, broader sense of underground musical history will enjoy the accidental or intentional references to a wacked-out attitude that sits comfortably alongside Nash The Slash or The Poetics. This is a band after WFMU’s sonic heart, and we’re throughly energized to see what they’ll do with the opportunity to render a live radio set.”

FUTURE DEATH TOLL forges sound and movement to create performances that posit issues like mortality, death, diseases, bdsm, prison as a corporation, anomie, and subjective destitution. Pondering questions like: what’s the most minimal amount of material required to conceptually encapsulate the relevant point? how can we heighten the sense of the present? how can disparate movements form a duet, solo, or group performance? how and when do these group forms coalesce or disperse? These questions become fodder for communication & collaboration between a small, but by no means exclusive, group of performers. Noise, poems, trash bags, heavy breathing, & sweat, provide transcendent moments of beauty in an otherwise somber landscape.

ON NUDITY

Hi Esther,
I am still “recovering” from the first meeting of INCIDENT. The conversation was a bit overwhelming to take in but it was great to talk and listen to a community of people who are invested in performance art. One thing that really stuck out me actually happened in our brief conversation after the meeting was over. I was talking about my reservations with creating a performance that did not involve nudity because a venue coordinator had questioned the amount of “adult content” that would be involved in an upcoming performance for an audience that was primarily made up of teenagers. Correct me if I am wrong but you flat out said to me that nudity was not essential to making a performance. I thought that was great and I am interested in exploring the need for nudity in performance. In my own practice, I have been thinking extensively about nudity (both sexual/non-sexual), costumes, props, and an exploration of feminism. Would you be interested in an informal interview/mutual exchange of ideas via this message thread? Maybe for publication or posting via the interwebs?

E:
Hi David, sure! Yes, glad you and Elizabeth came, these meetings are performances in and of themselves for sure…a bit exhausting but interesting ok yes, ON NUDITY…well I wasn’t sure if you were saying during that conversation that 1.) you feel that a (any) performance needs nudity, i.e. prescriptively, to be serious 2.) that you only make performances with nudity 3.) you were kidding and of course there are many performances that don’t involve nudity. If 1 or 2 is the case, since at the time I think I took it as 3, why do you feel this way? if it is part of your own work in a very serious way, why, and what do you feel that it adds/why it is needed? There are so many angles into this issue that maybe we can start with your views, so that I understand them a bit better? I imagine our experiences with being naked in public have been fairly different too, because of cisgender bodies and etc…
